Flat hunting?

Check out how your potential new flats rate before you sign up  –  www.housingstars.co.nz

It’s free to use, and gives you an excellent measuring stick to help compare flats to each other.   The rating includes many things you can’t inspect yourself (eg insulation, etc).

And if the place you’re looking at hasn’t got a rating – ask the landlord to get one.   It’s free to them as well, so it’d make you wonder what they might be hiding if they’re not keen on getting a rating.

28 May

Name your phone!

OPSA  gets lots of lost cell-phones and manages to return many - but only usually to those phones that have numbers for “Mum”, “Dad”, or “Flat”.
A really handy thing to do is to save an In-Case-of-Emergency phone number in your phone.  All you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who you want to be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE".
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc.

Not only will OPSA be able to tell whoever you choose where your lost phone is - but as a bonus if you are involved in an accident or were taken ill your family or whoever can be informed.
So do it right now before you forget.

12 May

Winter can get expensive in a student flat.

The LivingCampus in collaboration with Gyro magazine (published by OPSA, your students' association) is looking for ideas.

Can you come up with an original, practical suggestion for saving energy sustainably over winter?
E-mail them to gyro@opsa.org.nz or bring them up to the OPSA office.
A 250-word description will do; or, if writing is not your thing, diagrams and design drawings are even better.  (Either way, please make sure it's clearly and fully explained.)
For the prize... want to grow your own veges for free, but don't know where to start?  The LivingCampus will not only give you a starters' kit containing peas, garlic, and potted herbs to plant, but you'll also have the option of a free half-hour tutorial on basic vegetable gardening.  If you live close to campus, the tutorial could even happen at your flat!
Additionally, the winner will get a selection of vegetables from the LivingCampus to take home.
Please get all entries to Gyro or OPSA by Friday 28 May.  The winner will be notified on Monday 31 May, and prizes given on Wednesday 2 June at the Manaaki section of the LivingCampus.
Look out for this competition in Gyro's Food Issue this coming Monday...

Dunedin Fringe Festival – Volunteers Needed

The 2010 Dunedin Fringe Festival is nearly upon us, and with over 50 events in over 25 locations spread over 11 days, we need all the help we can get.

Volunteering for the Dunedin Fringe helps support the arts at the grass roots level.  Experience the joy of participation, with the added bonus of a limited edition t-shirt, half price stand-by tickets to Fringe shows, FREE entry to the Festival Club and the Fringe Awards night, and a healthy boost to your Karmic reservoir.

To register your interest as a 2010 Dunedin Fringe Volunteer, email volunteer@dunedinfringe.org.nz , or phone 477 3350.
